Target 730: Shall we study with police news?

News: Robbery

A robbery occurred this morning at Liberty Federal Bank on High Street. Four men carrying automatic weapons entered the bank at 1:00 p.m. and demanded that tellers hand over all the money in their drawers. One of the tellers signaled the authorities by pressing a silent alarm button during the robbery, but the gang had cleared out by the time the police showed up on the scene. None of the customers or bank employees were harmed.
Police detectives asked the witnesses to stick around and provide testimony. Several reported that the leader of the gang was completely bald and another man had distinctive tattoos on his arms. All of the witnesses agreed to testify in court if the four are arrested and charges with armed robbery. The police are trying to figure out ways to create a faster response time to the bank alarm. The gang plotted to make sure their hold-up coincided with road construction in both directions on High and First, which made it difficult for police cares to maneuver around large cranes and heavy equipment. The gang obviously came up with this strategy to give them extra time to get away from the scene --- and they succeeded in escaping.

Target 730: With regard to the Visas for the overseas business trips.

Visas

Foreign nationals wishing to enter the United States must obtain a non-immigrant or permanent residency visa --- B-1 for temporary business, or B-2 for pleasure or medical treatment. Students, temporary workers, etc, must apply for a different visa in the appropriate category. Travelers from some countries may enter without a visa. Applicants must show that they qualify under provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Act. Since the legal presumption is that every visitor intends to immigrate, visitors must overcome this by demonstrating that:

Their trip is for business, pleasure, or medical treatment;
They plan to remain for a specific, limited period;
They have a residence outside the U.S. and binding ties that will insure they will return abroad.

A visa does not guarantee admission. The U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) has authority to deny entry. The authorized period of stay is also determined by the INS. Port of entry officials must stamp Form I-94, Record of Arrival-Departure, which notes the length of stay permitted. Visitors wanting to stay beyond the period must contact the INS to request Form I-539, Application to Extend Status.

Target 730: Who did raised the price of gasoline?

A Drive Back to the '70s

While the Energy Secretary says it's a good bet that motorists may see "considerably lower" gas prices this summer than what they were hit with a year ago, globalization specialists caution that conflict in the Middle East could disrupt supplies and drive up prices. Since last fall, gas prices have risen 20-30 cents per gallon for what experts call a "fear premium".

Energy ministers from the world's richest nations met at a conference in Michigan last month and discusses the price of Gasoline at length. Based on many of the issues raised, the U.S. Energy Department plans to initiate steps to overcome the nation's dependence on Middle Eastern resources. To ensure a more reliable supply, the U.S. needs to set the wheels in motion for more domestically produced crude oil and more refining capacity.

Gas prices tent to rise in summer, because refiners must produce multiple fuel blends to comply with local air quality standards. And, during peak demand, such as the summer travel season, but that many problems lie in the strict environmental regulations, which stand in the way of building new refineries.

Target 730: Let's studying, how to read the newspaper.

A poll of New Hampshire residents shows that support for the president is hight and the majority is pleased with his management of the economy and the progress he has made against terrorism. There is still a vocal minority, however, that favors a more peaceful solution. The president has responded forcefully to recent incidents involving mail bombs and anthrax.

---76% approve of the president's strategies concerning foreign affairs, particularly the White House's attempts to negotiate new solutions in the Middle East
---72% approve of his response to the mail bomb threats
---70% approve of his handling of the economy
---58% favor the continued dispatch of ground troops into battle
---60% believe the United States will eventually destroy terrorist operations in Afghanistan.

From April 10-18, a random sample of 694 New Hampshire adults was taken through telephone interviews. There is a margin of error of ± 3.7 percent. The president approval is down somewhat from earlier in the year, but it still remains relatively high despite continued worries over growing unemployment.

Target 730: To enrich my vocabulary

Metals
Metals are generally hard, shiny materials. It is possible to bend or hammer them into different shapes. Three common examples of metals are iron, copper, and aluminum. Any rock material that contains enough metal in it to be mined is known as an ore. Metals can be combined to make tough, new materials called alloys.
Aluminum is used to make foil and pipes; copper is used for pots exposed to wet or damp air. Rusty metal is weak and crumbles easily. Metal objects cab be treated, however, to prevent rust.

Money
We use money to pay for the things we buy. Each coin and bill is worth a different amount. Bill use complicated patterns, water-marks, and special paper that is difficult to fake or copy. Some people save their coins in a piggy bank.

Health
Staying healthy is important to keep your body working properly. A heapthy diet gives your body energy and helps it repair itself. Exercise makes your muscles strong and keeps you fit. Playing sports is a wonderful way to exercise. Germs can cause illness and infection. If you scrape your skin, you should clean it to kill the germs.

(http://www.chugoku-np.co.jp/News/Sp201011150124.html)

(1) The company decided to acquire a major company abroad and
promised immediate payment, all of ( ) would come from a major
bank loan.

(A) whom (B) which (C) whose (D) what

all of payment would come from〜という英文になる。

(1) Japanese companies are still collapsing in close to record
numbers, reflecting Japanese banks' aggressive ( ) of support
from their most troubled borrowers.

(A) withdraw (B) withdrawn (C) withdrew (D) withdrawal

Tips

" reflecting Japanese banks' aggressive ( ) of support from their most troubled borrowers."

(1) The explanation for the performance in the past few years is
( ) considered to be the so-called productivity miracle driven
by information technology.

(A) general (B) generally (C) generously (D) generalizing

game for fund managers.

(A) Unless (B) Whether (C) Due to (D) Although

Although

また(B)のWhetherでも、whether+S+Vで、「SがVするかどうか」という意味になるのでNG。

(1) The two owners of the used bookstore expected their business to
be ( ) after two years.

(A) profit (B) profiting (C) profitable (D) profited

(C) profitable・・・be able toと同類かと

【Tips】

The two owners of the used bookstore

Quote from TIME magazine a articles

Please allow me to quote from TIME magazine a articles in part of as below;
It was Issued at August 9, 2010.

Title is "The Wizard From Oz".
It refers to the WikiLeaks which were founded by Mr Julian Assange.

In this article, he says "We must make the default assumption that each individual has the right to communicate knowledge to other individuals,".

-----
Who's the man behind WikiLeaks, the website that's caused so much trouble?
An itinerant Australian hacker.
BY EBEN HARRBELL

Julian assange is about to sit down to explain how his web site, WikiLeaks.org, came to publish more than 90,000 secret reports from the war in Afghanistan when he starts to get restless.
His chair is made of soft leather, and Assange doesn't like it. "There's no hard surface to slam my fist on and say, 'F____bastards! I will crash them all!'" he says, smiling.

It's hard to tell whether Assange is joking. A tall, wan, white-haired former computer hacker, Assange is so soft-spoken, it is sometimes difficult to hear him. But just a day earlier, his website released a log of documents that exposed in unprecedented detail the difficulties NATO troops face in Afghanistan.

Nothing gives Assange more pleasure than embarrassing the powerful; he founded WikiLeaks in 2006 as a sort of dead drop for whistle-blowers to anonymously post confidential material. And with six years of the Afghanistan war on display- including many reports of civilian casualties and suspicions that Pakistan's intelligence service and the Taliban are in collusion- Assange has his biggest scoop to date. "I am a journalist, a publisher and an inventor," Assange says. "I have tried to invent a system that soloves the problem of censorship of the press and the censorship of the whistle-blower the whole world."

(1) The rise ( ) price of the bank stock is largely attributed
to the strong recommendation of the leading securities house.

(A) with (B) at (C) on (D) in

(B) on

Drowned World / Substitute for Love

Drowned World / Substitute for Love
Madonna

Madonna

-----
I traded fame for love
Without a second thought
It all became a silly a game
Some things cannot be bought

I got exactly what I asked for
Wanted it so badly
Running, rushing back for more
I suffered fools so gladly

And now I find
I've changed my mind

Chorus:

No The face of you
My substitute for love
My substitute for love
Should I wait for you
My substitute for love
My substitute for love

I traveled round the world
Looking for a home
I found myself in crowded rooms
Feeling so alone

I had so many lovers
Who settled for the thrill
Of basking in my spotlight
I never felt so happy

(chorus)

Mmmmm, ooohhh, mmmmm
Famous faces, far off places
Trinkets I can buy
No handsome stranger, heady danger
Drug that I can try
No ferris wheel, no heart to steal
No laughter in the dark
No one-night stand, no far-off land
No fire that I can spark
Mmmmm, mmmmm

(chorus)

Now I find I've changed my mind
This is my religion

(1)( ) can get more than 125 points on the exam will be employed
by the company.

(A) Who (B) Whom (C) Whose (D) Whoever

(D) Whoever

(1) The file clerk decided to change the location of ( ) filed
item because many people complained about the difficulty of locating
materials that they needed.

(A) all (B) every (C) few (D) many

all、few、manyのあとならitemsと複数形に

(1) Basic information on levels of currency reserves, credit
expansion and trade balance is readily ( ).

(A) dependable (B) available (C) extensive (D) promising
